The Black Lion Hospital (Tikur Anbessa Hospital) is located on Churchill Rd. behind Tiglachin monument in Addis Ababa Ethiopia. The hospital is one of the most prominent in Ethiopia. The hospital is an 800-bed teaching hospital and approximately 600 out-patients are seen per day. However, in relation to its size, the hospital had limited equipment and acute staffing problems; the oncology unit of the hospital is the worst affected. The department has only one cobalt radiotherapy machine for all types of cancer, and patients have to wait for up to nine months for treatment. There are over 100 kids and over 100 adults with various types of cancer in the hospital. No isolation room, no treatment. There is a 6 month wait to see the Doctor in the radiotherapy department. There is a ten month wait to get radiotherapy treatment.
The decision to work strictly with Tikur Anbessa (Black Lion) was made to speed up the process of treating patients faster until we build our own dedicated hospital. Our mission is to provide equipment and medication to Tikur Anbessa and to give immediate access for those who are suffering now. In return Tikur Anbessa will provide free service to our patients.
