Outpatient Department
This department consists of 4 sections: Medical, Pediatric, Gynecology, and Surgical. Patients registered at the hospital will be diagnosed for corresponding treatments at these 4 main sections. These will be located on the ground floor of the main hospital building. The outpatient department consists of the Laboratories, Pharmacy, and a Radiology center with general and special X-ray services.
Inpatient department
This department consists of wards for patients that stay and get treatment. The Ward at the main hospital building can accommodate up to 270 beds. In addition to this, as indicated below, the hospital consists of long-stay wards, which can accommodate up to 70 beds. The hospital will have a total of 340 beds. The wards will be located from the second to the fourth floor. The second floor consists of the Medical and Pediatric patient's wards. The third floor will consist of wards for Maternity and Gynecology. The maternity section will have special delivery rooms. The fourth floor will consist of two wings of surgical wards one for each gender and four operation theatres. The theatres will be equipped with modern and up-to-date equipment. There are four theatres because many cancers, if detected early, could be treated with surgery. However, post-surgical patients need to be treated with radiotherapy or chemotherapy. An Infusion center for Blood bone marrow, Immuno-therapy and Bone marrow transplant will also be available.
Pathology department
The department of Pathology will be located on the first floor. It will be located here for easy-access and privacy. It is accessible both to the outpatient department and the wards. It will be highly sophisticated with specialized departments. About 40% of the space on the first floor will be left for this department. There will be a large and modern pathology laboratory. All kinds of diagnosis for cancer that need further investigation will be undertaken here. The department will be able to provide diagnostic services for other hospitals and health facilities throughout the country. The department will be equipped with modern medical instruments like magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), CT scans, fib optic endoscopes, and biopsies. Experience and sources from the famous Encarta reference library shows that biopsy remains the only definitive method for the diagnosis of a cancer. In a biopsy, a section of tissue is removed from the tumor itself or from a metastasis. Modern technology has greatly reduced the need for open surgical biopsy. Guided by palpation or a computerized axial tomography (CAT or CT) scan, a tumor in almost any part of the body can be biopsied through a thin, flexible needle. This permits diagnosis before surgery so that the doctor and patient can plan for treatment and surgery, if it is necessary (Encarta, 2003).
Hematology department
The hematology department will be concerned with the study of blood and blood-forming tissues. Common and special blood tests will be undertaken in this department. It is intended to diagnose blood cancer and disorders such as leukemia, anemia, and hemophilia, as well as diseases of the organs that produce blood, including the lymph nodes, bone marrow, and spleen. In Ethiopia, this type of service is technically outdated. Similarly, this center could be used as referral for other hospitals and health services in Ethiopia. This department will closely work with the pathology and therapy center.
Therapy center and long-stay wards
Cancer patients usually need to undergo series of treatments after surgery. A combination of treatments may also be required. Even after remission, the patients need routine follow-up visits. For these reasons, the therapy center and long-stay patients will be located together in a separate complex. The therapy center consists of rooms and services for: Radiotherapy (2 cobalt rooms), physical therapy, water therapy, immunology, chemotherapy, gymnasium, examination and consultation. Depending on needs, the hospital could have a gene therapy center and also other new modern treatments. In addition, offices for doctors, nurses and technical staff are provided. Wards for therapeutic patients, kitchen, laundry, stores, utility rooms, work rooms and offices for related staff are also included. For patients that need to have more seclusion, comfortable villas are provided near the therapy center and long-stay ward.
