3. In October 2006, the foundation applied for NGO (Non-Governmental Organization) status in Ethiopia.
4. We discovered that since there is no national registry for cancer in Ethiopia, the Government, the United Nations and the World Health Organization are not providing grants. To expedite nationwide cancer registry, we are traveling to Ethiopia on March 10, 2007 to open an office and start preparation for the work we plan to give the nation. People have been told that if you have cancer you die. According to the Doctors, Cancer kills twice the number of people than any other infectious illness but there is still no awareness.
5. During our October trip we tried to raise awareness about cancer. Many people now know what to do, but there is still no solution for the problem because there is no medication or proper treatment facility. There are hundreds of patients - kids, women and men - with no hope. According to Dr. Bogale Solomon, the hospital receives 65,000 to 150,000 patients a year but they can partially treat only 500 patients. Click here to view pictures of some of the patients. Those who have money seek help abroad but for those who are poor it is a death sentence to have cancer in Ethiopia. In general in Africa the number of cancer patients increases by 5% every year but no action has been taken. A majority of the victims are women and children. For example, a 4 year old child has a tumor on his eyes. They took out an eye and they say if he doesn't get help it can come back and kill him. 80% of cancer patients are women. 33% is cervical, 18% is breast and 17% is head and neck. They don't have specific numbers for kids yet.
6. Dr. Bogale Solomon, the radio department head and Ato Wondu, Mathy cancer society founder was with us in all our campaigns. Our purpose is to work with all Ethiopian NGO's. During our campaign, we want to make sure people understand what it takes to heal cancer patients. We told them how important it is not to wait when they find something new in their body.
